Metal Braces & Clear Braces

Metal Braces

Metal braces typically consist of brackets placed on the teeth and wires that are tightened to help move the teeth and bite into correct and straighter alignment. They are adjusted with the help of rubber bands that attach the wires to the brackets. While self-ligating braces have clips instead of coloured rubber bands that hold the wires to the brackets.

Clear Braces

Clear braces have tooth-colored or clear brackets. Clear braces are an option when the patient does not want to have very visible metal braces. A disadvantage with clear braces is it be stained or discolored over time.
Metal braces tend to be less costly and treatment time isn’t affected by the way the appliances work together.

How long is the treatment?

Treatment time depends on the following factors:
• The severity of the misalignment
• Whether a functional appliance, headgear or other appliances are necessary
• Whether teeth extractions are necessary
• Whether jaw surgery is needed
• The health of your mouth
• Patient compliance
