Pit and Fissure Sealants

Pit and Fissure Sealants

Once permanent teeth come in at 6 years old, the deep grooves should be sealed to protect your teeth from cavities.

What Is Dental Sealant?

A dental sealant is a thin coating material that is applied to the chewing surfaces of the teeth, primarily permanent molars and premolars. Dental sealants are white and aren’t visible on the teeth during activities such as talking.

What Is Its Purpose?

Sealants is a way to protect teeth from the bacteria that contributes to tooth decay. Most of the time, the sealant is applied after the tooth erupts, normally between six and twelve years of age.

However, sealants can also be used for older children and adults if their teeth have deep grooves or show signs of previous decay.
